BI senior researcher Agota Scharle presented at a conference held in Brussels to examine the potential role of the European Social Fund in meeting the new Europe 2020 objectives.
In her talk, Scharle argued that the European Social Fund (ESF) should finance activities that contribute to meeting Europe 2020 objectives and also yield added value at the European level. A potential source of added value is to support projects for the most disadvantaged groups. Such projects reduce poverty and social tensions but are often underfunded as their political returns for the national governments tend to be small, or even negative.
The conference was organised by the European Commission, and it was held in Brussels, 23-24 June, 2010.
It is a general popular error to suppose the loudest complainers for the public to be the most anxious for its welfare. (Edmund Burke, 1769)
